Oh man, I've been reading some of the one star reviews for fun and this is a webcomic I actually tried reading a long time ago so I thought I'd check out the latest pages. The last two pages (not including a fundraising ad) are just... brilliant! I think this one is for you El Santo Pretentious?
I actually liked Demo Reel.
I thought that the poor reception was a result of people not being able to get over the fact that Walker had retired the Nostalgia Critic.

On the other hand, I see the point you're trying to make. I believe Mike Krahulik made a similar point regarding art in that the key to improving your craft is to constantly hate the work you're producing. This lack of satisfaction means that you will be able to make something consistently better each time, assuming you don't take the concept to its extreme.

DC Comics is dead to me post-New 52. Modern superhero comics are basically glorified fan-fic anyway, and DC's current output is barely even glorified. A well-written fan-fic might actually be more glorified than DC's current output.

I wonder if all the people who have complained about invincible, planet-juggling Superman being impossible to write for over the years might have missed the point. Yes, there's no credible threat for Superman that doesn't involve kryptonite; so the Silver Age stories didn't even try. There's a reason Superman's rogues gallery consists of either a generic mad scientist or a corrupt executive with no combat abilities whatsoever and absolutely nothing else. Superman is supposed to be a gigantic Mary Sue; that's basically the whole point of the character.

My wife's a school teacher, so I guess that makes me appreciate kid's webcomics more and more these days. Seriously, one of my best comic related memories was when my niece found the huge Bone phone book that you see on the right of the site's header. She loved it so much she took to reading it aloud and taking it to bed with her. I wish there were more comics out there that would inspire that same sense of wonder.

Xanthe the Big-Wheel riding radfem is basically the feminist version fo Seymour, the sanctimonious hyper-pious religious nut. She's over-the-top, arrogant, and wildly overconfident in her views, angrily dismissing anyone who disagrees or even questions her sacred dogma.

The problem is, Ishida established Seymour first... and Seymour was regularly mocked for his ignorance and inflexibility. He was a fool who got shown up and humiliated for his extremism. The strip made it clear that arrogant extremists would all be handled in this same irreverent and comical manner, and it followed that pattern for many years.

Then Xanthe came long, and she got to be the sole exception to the rule; her arrogance was never exposed, she was never shown the error of her ways in embodying extremism. Instead, she always won. That doesn't work. And it isn't funny. Extremists of all stripes used to be fair game in Sinfest, with the end lesson being "There are some good ideas in most beliefs, but extremism always backfires." Now, Ishida has built a fence around radical feminism and said "No, these ones get away with it."

Though I only read what you had linked, I can see the attraction for one main reason.... that i will get to in a moment. It seems at some point in the past, comics "were not just for kids anymore!" And with the freedom that webcomics give their creators, it sometimes feels like there aren't really any comics for kids left... sure, a 10 year old kid might love the X-Men still, as i did, but what about that preschool kid who is just learning to read? Comics can be a great introduction to learning, as the pictures can help young readers put what they are reading into context.

Personally, though this may not be your type of thing (and frankly it's not really mine either) i think it's wonderful that someone out there is thinking about what made them happy when they were young, and that they are trying to give some of that feeling back to a new younger generation.

Overall I think this is a grwat review for the same reason. It looks at the target audience and judges its performance ( i guess?) based on that, not simply based on the reviewer's taste... juste because something doesn't have edgy, adult themes, doesn't mean it's not worth anything.

Also El Santo, props on working out the comment box! It's nice to be able to type on a mobile device in a text box and actually be able to go back amd correct mistakes, as opposed to the box staying the same size and not allowing one to scroll in the box because the webpage just scrolls instead..... this is now the only site that comments are not a pain to write with a touchscreen. Thanks!
