Joy of Webcomics: Back from a much needed four day weekend edition
OK, apologies for the lateness again. I’m going to have to stop posting these, since it ends up turning the entire blog into a string of apologies. Let’s just say the long weekend was longer than I expected, I now find myself in the position of entertaining visiting relatives, which gives me little time currently at the moment to read and review webcomics. Super sorry. Let’s just say that this site is going to be sporadically updated over summer in general.
But hey, some interesting webcomic news came down the pipeline while I was not-sunning myself on the cloudy beaches of Oregon. A few highlights:
- Fleen reports that Hark! A Vagrant‘s Kate Beaton will have toons appearing in the New Yorker! Here’s to hoping that the finished result will be less inscrutable than the typical fare.
- Meanwhile, via ComixTalk, Chris Onstad chews the fat with the Portland Mercury on cooking Achewood style, which is pretty much about eating testicles. So… basically the Andrew Zimmern diet.
- Also Robot 6 reports on the new sci-fi tilted Spacedock 7 collective, which includes “Random Quickie” alum Cleopatra in Spaaace!.
And let me just say I appreciate the hard work Robot 6′s Brigid Alverson is putting into her webcomic-related posts these last few days … it makes us slackers look really, really bad. Check out her blog at Paperless Comics, where she links to some interviews with Octopus Pie‘s Meredith Gran, Velia, Dear‘s Rina Piccolo, and others.
That’s it for now. Oh, yeah, a note to Canadians that the Joe Shuster Awards are this Saturday, and the webcomic field is stacked. Here’s a full list:
Outstanding Web Comics Creator or Creative Team / Créateur ou Créateurs Exceptionnel de Bandes Dessinées Web
- Attila Adorjany – Metaphysical Neuroma
- Kate Beaton – Hark! A Vagrant
- Andy Belanger – Bottle of Awesome and Raising Hell

Incidentally, I’ve only just realized that many of my most recent reviews (and several of my upcoming reviews) are Canadian in origin. Which kinda freaks me out … AND, actually, helps explain why a lot of Webcomic Overlook readers hail from the Great White North. Good luck to all nominees.
