I'm definitely going to chime in and say this comic is dead to me. Not only did Pete Menotti burn it into the ground but he did it while ignoring his readers who wanted to watch Team Diva flourish on. Comments where he bluntly tells us that we should just deal with triggering scenarios and sexual abuse overdid it for me (especially when he gave out statistics saying most of them were probably sexual abuse survivors). I wish he would just stop because honestly since Thieme and Ibardolaza left it honestly shows how much he lacks understanding of comics and how to speak to his audience.

It broke my heart to watch this comic crash and burn.

I definitely think it's time to reassess Evil Diva. There was a time jump just as the magic staff was starting to get explored and, suddenly, everything went...off. The shorelines, pacing, characters, all of the writing, really, is confoundingly bad. They got a new artist, but the art is still quite good. But like Penny and Aggie derailing at it's peak of interest, Evil Diva is going in an unexpected direction that's frustrating rather than exciting. They decided to go with more adult themes, which isn't bad in and of itself But they're handling them in a terrible way. Anyway. I recommend revisiting it.

Ah, that's the drawback of reviewing continuing series: things are always changing, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. (Kinda like For Better or Worse, now that I think about it. A fairly brilliant comic strip that turned into a downer of a drama-bomb in its recent incarnations.)

There might be a comic that I reviewed that I found mediocre but engages in a brilliant plotline a few pages later. Updating each review would be a whole lot of work and wouldn't really capture my initial impressions when I first cracked open the comic. Also, a comic that seemed brilliant when I first come across it, for example, but then becomes industry standard a few months later and seems less original. Like, oh, Penny Arcade.

Still, I think you're on to something and I should spend some time taking a look at some of my earlier reviews. I'll definitely take a look at Evil Diva and see if that particular scene manages to derail the comic like you say. I've seen some very good comics get ruined by one or two bad scenes (the drama moments in Shortpacked!, for example) so it's quite possible you're right.

I think you may need to take another look at Evil Diva -- right after you posted this review, the comic had a fight scene which lasted several pages and was such a convoluted mess I stopped reading the comic entirely. It shocks me that anyone on the ED team has studied sequential art. The pacing was poor, the staging was unclear, and Diva seemed to double in size relative the other characters in the scene, only whether this was intentional or not remains unclear.

Regardless, I think you need to give it a second look, because it's such a big thing for myself and my comic-reading friends (a few of whom also gave up on the comic at that point) that the review really doesn't provide a good overview of the full comic any longer.
